The University of Melbourne is a public research university located in Melbourne, Australia. Founded in 1853, it is Australia’s second oldest university and the oldest in Victoria.

Master of Philosophy – The Master of Philosophy (MPhil) is an internationally recognised masters degree by research and requires the completion of a thesis of 30,000-40,000 words. Masters by Research – Masters by research degrees differ from the MPhil in that they may have a coursework component, along with a shorter thesis of about 30 000 words. Doctor of Philosophy – Graduating with a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) marks admission to the community of scholars in students discipline and requires the completion of a thesis of 80,000-100,000 words on a specialized topic. Students work under the guidance of at least two supervisors, who provide advice and support throughout the research degree.
