Established in 1874, the University of Adelaide is an open university, which is known to be the 3rd oldest university in Australia. In 1876, the university offered its first degree, Bachelor of Arts. Also, it is the first university to elect a woman in University Council, Australia. The university comprises of 4 campuses of which North Terrace is the main campus. It is surrounded by the Art Gallery of South Australia. 

Mission: focus is informed by the manifold changes confronting today’s society, including the: need for economic transition—to new industries and jobs imperative of social transformation—demanding more accessible, lifelong learning impact of globalisation—making global opportunities available locally pervasive nature of technological disruption—redefining socio-economic constructs pursuit of sustainability—socially, economically and environmentally.

The university is associated with five Nobel laureates, constituting one-third of Australia’s total Nobel Laureates, and 110 Rhodes scholars. The university has had a considerable impact on the public life of South Australia, having educated many of the state’s leading businesspeople, lawyers, medical professionals and politicians. The university has been associated with many notable achievements and discoveries, such as the discovery and development of penicillin, the development of space exploration, sunscreen, the military tank, Wi-Fi, polymer banknotes and X-ray crystallography, and the study of viticulture and oenology.

The University of Adelaide is one of the most research-intensive universities in Australia, securing over $180 million in research funding annually. Its researchers are active in both basic and commercially oriented research across a broad range of fields including agriculture, psychology, health sciences, and engineering.

Research strengths include engineering, mathematics, science, medical and health sciences, agricultural sciences, artificial intelligence, and the arts.

LOCATION:

The University has four campuses. Three in South Australia at North Terrace, Waite and Roseworthy and one in Melbourne, Victoria. We also offer undergraduate and postgraduate programs in Singapore through the Ngee Ann-Adelaide Education Centre and have a number of research facilities at Thebarton.
